There is nothing more exciting than planning an interior space for a child. Children are so curious and love to explore colour and textures. Your palettes don’t have to be rainbow and this is not compulsory. It is possible to create an interesting space for children using muted tones or pastels.
The first thing you need to look at when designing a space for a child is the size of the room and the space you have available. You need to take into account where the doors, windows and radiators are located. Look at the purpose of the room and what your child does in this space. Is it a play space as well as a sleep space? If your child uses the space for play you will need to look at your toy storage options. There are so many different ways to store toys! Ikea have a large range of storage solutions that are affordable and practical. Their storage looks great too which is a bonus!
Create a mood board for your design. This doesn’t have to be an actual board because digital options are easier and you could just set up a Pinterest board and pin things you like to it. The internet is your friend when it comes to sourcing things to make your design special. For inspiration you can literally ask Pinterest for inspo right down to your chosen colours scheme, for example girls rooms in muted tones or boys rooms in blue and greens. Once you have pinned a few lovely things to you digital mood board you can begin to search for paints or wall papers and make a start on your project.
To be honest when I decorate a space I begin with an idea of how I want the room to feel and begin by exploring colour palettes. I do make changed as I work and as the scheme evolves. For example when I began working on our new kids space at Lovely Button Ups HQ which is also a space for my grandchildren, I chose a pink paint from Lick. I painted all four walls and realised that it was in fact too pink. I love pink and the more the merrier but because we have a Velux window and part of the room is higher than a standard ceiling I felt that it was definitely too much. I then made a decision to introduce a wallpaper from Lust home in pink yellow and white. I thought that I would wallpaper one and a half walls. The Bottom part of one wall was already panelled from a previous project so wall papering above would break up the pink. In the end I decided to wallpaper two and a half walls because I had a dull wall with a radiator and a door so the pattern completely changed the feel of it and the room was an absolute success. Never be afraid to change your mind half way through as you build your design and bring things together. I couldn't be happier with the results!
I did spend more money on the space than I first anticipated but I see it as a good investment. I use the room for content creation for our social channels so the room is styled on a regular basis with decor from lots of gorgeous small business owners.
